After nearly two decades, Thunderbird has finally unveiled a newly redesigned logo that aims to celebrate its history and exciting future.

"Just like the software, the current Thunderbird logo has seen small, iterative improvements throughout the last 20 years. But now the software is evolving into something more modern (while retaining its powerful customization)," shares Ryan Sipes, Thunderbird's Product Manager. "We believe it deserves a fresh logo that properly represents this revitalization."

Mozilla Thunderbird is a cross-platform email client, a personal information manager, a news client, an RSS, and a chat client operated by MZLA Technologies Corporation, a subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. Born as an independent, community-driven project, Thunderbird is managed and overseen by the elected Thunderbird Council. The project strategy was originally modeled after that of Mozilla's Firefox web browser and built as an interface on top of that web browser.

As a versatile platform, Thunderbird manages multiple email, newsgroup, and news feed accounts, supporting multiple identities within accounts. Its quick search, saved search folders, advanced message filtering, message grouping, and tags help users manage and find messages efficiently. Moreover, Thunderbird incorporates a Bayesian spam filter and can understand classifications by server-based filters such as SpamAssassin.

Extensions provide added functionality to Thunderbird, such as the ability to change its look and feel through various themes. The application supports a variety of email industry standards including POP, IMAP, LDAP address auto-completion, S/MIME, and OpenPGP for email encryption and signing. It also supports Atom and RSS for web feeds, IRC, XMPP, and Matrix protocols for chat, and NNTP and NNTPS for newsfeeds.

Thunderbird runs on Linux, Windows, macOS, with unofficial ports available for FreeBSD and OpenBSD. It's also developing an Android version in collaboration with the K-9 email client. Translated into more than 65 languages, Thunderbird is a truly global platform with robust security features that include TLS/SSL connections to IMAP and SMTP servers, digital signing, and message encryption.
